UCU Claims Bronze at FISU University World Cup 3×3 Basketball Championship

The Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) celebrates an historic milestone as Uganda Christian University (UCU) women’s team claimed the bronze medal at the 2025 FISU University World Cup 3×3, cementing Africa’s place on the global basketball stage.

The journey to the podium began with a spectacular group stage performance on Saturday, November 16th, where UCU made history by advancing to the quarter-finals for the first time. The team demonstrated remarkable composure, opening with a dominant 19-11 victory over University of Seville, followed by a nail-biting 17-15 comeback win against University of Chile that saw Shillah Lamunu bank a crucial 2-point shot in the final moments.

“This victory resonates across the continent,” FASU Secretary General stated. “It is a testament to the world-class talent and unwavering spirit within African universities. UCU and their MVP have inspired a generation.”

The breakthrough tournament saw Tracy Namugosa crowned Tournament Most Valuable Player, capping an extraordinary campaign that saw UCU progress through the knockout stages to ultimately secure the bronze medal against China’s Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

While the UCU men’s team faced tough competition in their pool games, falling to Huaqiao University and University of Puerto Rico before a playoff loss to University of Melbourne, their participation alongside the United States International University-Africa men’s team demonstrated Africa’s growing depth in international 3×3 basketball.

This bronze medal represents Africa’s most significant achievement in the FISU 3×3 World Cup to date, marking a new era of competitiveness and providing a powerful benchmark for university sports across the continent.

FASU extends its congratulations to all athletes, coaches, and university communities for this outstanding achievement that has firmly placed African university basketball on the global map.
