In a significant step for international university sports, the Federation of Africa Sports Universities (FASU) joined its continental counterparts for a landmark gathering at the FISU headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. The two-day seminar, the first of its kind since 2019, brought together operational leaders from all five Continental University Sports Federations (CUSFs) under the powerful theme, “Stronger Together.”
The meeting marked a renewed commitment to global collaboration, uniting representatives from the European (EUSA), Americas (FISU America), Oceania (FISU Oceania), African (FASU), and Asian (AUSF) federations.
Representing FASU were Ahmed Farouk, Executive Assistant to the President, and Rhymond Muhumuza, IT & Operations Administrator. Their presence ensured that African perspectives and priorities were integral to the discussions shaping the future of university sports worldwide.

The seminar moved beyond formalities, diving into substantive conversations on the pillars of modern university sports. The agenda was built around shared challenges and opportunities, with a focus on:
- Sport Events: Innovating competition formats and improving the athlete experience.
- Education & Student Wellbeing: Enhancing academic forums and supporting the holistic health of student-athletes.
- Sustainability: Embedding sustainable practices into events and operations.
- Marketing: Increasing the visibility and value of university sports globally.
The spirit of “Stronger Together” was translated into actionable plans. Key outcomes from the seminar promise to have a direct impact on university sports across Africa and around the world:
- A Synchronized Calendar: An agreement to develop a common international event calendar, preventing scheduling conflicts and creating a clearer pathway for athletes.
- Elevated Education: Plans to enhance flagship academic events like the FISU World Conference.
- Focus on Wellbeing: A commitment to further develop the Healthy Campus program, directly supporting student health and wellness.
- Supporting Dual Careers: Continued promotion of pathways that allow students to excel in both their academic and athletic pursuits.
- Digital Advancement: Exploration of shared digital tools to make university sports more accessible and efficient for everyone.
FISU Secretary General Matthias Remund emphasized the importance of transparent communication and shared goals, noting that the insights gained will be crucial for strengthening intercontinental collaboration.
To ensure this momentum is not lost, the participants agreed to make this collaborative seminar an annual event, cementing a new era of partnership and continuous progress for the global university sports movement.
