11th FASU Games: Godwin Mary’s mental preparation for Success

Godwin Mary, a standout tennis player at the 11th All Africa University Games, has revealed her unique pre-match routine that has contributed to her success on the court.

Mary believes that mental preparation is just as important as physical training in achieving athletic excellence.

Before stepping onto the court, Mary takes out her jotter and writes down five key points, Focus, Determination, Stay on the Court, Go for All Points, and Ginger Yourself.

“I’ve been doing this for a while now. It is a tradition for me and it has helped me cope on the days when I struggle,” Mary said.

The FASU Games was a special one for Mary as it marked her final major competition as a university athlete. Having previously won silver at the Nigeria University Games (NUGA) Games and being named Singles MVP at the WAUG, Mary is now looking to transition into professional tennis.

Her partner in the Women’s Doubles victory, Destiny Okhinaye, is a promising young talent with a bright future ahead. As a freshman, Destiny has the potential to achieve great things in the sport.
