Vibrant African university delegations light up the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games opening ceremony with cultural displays.
Student-athletes from 22 African countries participated in the grand procession, waving their national flags and wearing their official university attire.

Nigeria, South Africa and Zambia led the charge with strong delegations, with high hopes of delivering medals for Africa.
Beyond these three prominent nations, lists of participants confirmed the broad representation of countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Egypt, Ghana, Burundi, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Gambia, Libya, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sao Tome, Tunisia, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe.

Spectacular Opening Ceremony
The Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games opening ceremony was a bang on Wednesday evening at the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena in Duisburg, Germany.
The sold-out opening ceremony was a spectacular display of music, emotion, and celebration, setting the tone for the next 12 days of competition.

Artists like Ayliva, Montez, Querbeat, and DJ Topic, backed by the WDR Funkhausorchester and hundreds of dancers, brought the arena to life with a unique blend of classical and contemporary sound.
With over 9,200 student‑athletes from more than 150 countries will feature 234 medal events across 18 sports, including fan favourites such as athletics, basketball, badminton, taekwondo, swimming, diving, fencing, gymnastics, judo, table tennis, volleyball, and tennis across six cities including Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Mülheim, Hagen, and Berlin.

African stars to watch as the Games begin:
Chaima Toumi (Tunisia)
Tunisian Taekwondo athlete Toumi, a World Taekwondo and African Games Champion, will represent her country.
Angella Okutoyi (Kenya)
Okutoyi, a rising tennis star, will represent Kenya in Germany and anticipates a successful tournament.
“I am looking forward to meeting top students-athletes from around the world, pushing my limits, and representing my country with pride. The goal is clear, I am here to win,” she told FASU.
Mohamed Khalil Jendoubi (Tunisia)
Mohammed will represent Tunisia in Taekwondo and aims to win Africa a medal.
