The third Afro-varsity 3X3 championship comes to an end with Uganda Christian University (UCU) emerging victorious in both men and women’s categories.

The two-day event came to a close following heated drama filled semifinal, play-off and final matches with UCU emerging victorious by close of business. A semifinal clash in the men’s category between UCU and hosts United States International University Africa (USIU-A) opened the day, with the former defeating the latter in 21 – 18. Institut supérieur d'entrepreneurship et de gestion (ISEG) faced Makerere University in a tightly contested semifinal match with ISEG winning the game 16 – 11.

In the women’s semifinals, ISEG powered their way through fellow Senegal based team; Université Internationale Des Diasporas Africaines (UNIDAF) beating them 21 – 9 to advance to the final. UCU made it to the final following a thrilling 14 – 11 win over Kenya based University of Nairobi (UON).

UCU’s hard-fought 14 – 13 win over ISEG ensured that the Uganda based university took home the gold nevertheless; both teams qualify for FISU 3X3 World University league as both the first and second teams advance. With qualification for the World University league confirmed, UCU out played a physical ISEG team beating them 13 – 8 in the women’s final.

UNIDAF’s 15 – 12 win over UON was sufficient to earn the bronze as they came in third in the ladies category.  Following a loss in the earlier semifinal tie with ISEG, Makerere had a gleam of hope of winning silverware on this trip. It was the hosts, USIU-A which cruised past Makerere University, beating the disheartened Kampala side 15 – 8 to earn the bronze medal in the men’s category.

Attention now goes toward the FISU 3X3 World University League where 4 teams will be representing Africa.
