Uganda Christian University Triumphs at the 6th Afro Varsity 3×3 Basketball Challenge

In a thrilling showcase of collegiate 3×3 basketball, Uganda Christian University (UCU) emerged as the standout team at the 6th Afro Varsity 3×3 Basketball Challenge, held on July 27-28, 2024. The tournament, which served as a qualifying event for the FISU 3×3 University World Cup, saw top teams from across Africa compete for a chance to represent the continent in Xiamen, China this November.

Men’s Category : Uganda Christian University and University of Cape Coast Shine

In the men’s category, Uganda Christian University and the University of Cape Coast demonstrated exceptional skill and teamwork. Both teams played nine games each, finishing with identical records of eight wins and only one loss. Despite their shared success, the University of Cape Coast secured the top spot with a slight edge in points per game and total points scored, ending the tournament with an impressive 180 points. Uganda Christian University followed closely, leading with a win percentage of 89% and accumulating 174 points.

The American University in Cairo and the University of Ibadan rounded out the top four, with the American University in Cairo securing the third position and the University of Ibadan in fourth. Notable performances also came from the United States International University – Africa and the University of Ghana, who finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Women’s Category: UCU Dominates with Perfect Record

In the women’s division, Uganda Christian University showcased an outstanding performance, winning all eight of their games and finishing with a perfect 100% win rate. Their dominance was evident as they led in both points per game (18.4) and total points (147). The United States International University – Africa secured the second spot, having won six out of seven games and averaging 17.4 points per game.

The American University in Cairo, the 2023 champions of the women’s division, placed third this year. The Zetech Sparks from Kenya demonstrated strong play, finishing fourth with four wins in six games.

Path to the FISU 3×3 University World Cup

With the conclusion of the 6th Afro Varsity 3×3 Basketball Challenge, Uganda Christian University and the University of Cape Coast will represent Africa in the men’s competition at the 3×3 University World Cup in Xiamen. Meanwhile, Uganda Christian University and the United States International University – Africa will carry the African flag in the women’s competition.

The 6th Afro Varsity 3×3 Basketball Challenge has once again proven to be a significant event in the basketball calendar, highlighting the growing talent and competitive spirit across African universities. Fans and teams alike look forward to the next chapter in Xiamen, where African teams will aim to make their mark on the global stage.
