3rd Afro-Varsity 3X3 Basketball Championships Tip off
The third edition of the Federation of Africa University Sport 3X3 championships dubbed Afro-Varsity 3x3 Basketball Championship tipped off on the Saturday 27 April 2019. The two-day event hosted in Nairobi-Kenya, at United States International University – Africa (USIU-A) and has attracted athletes from universities in four FASU member countries.
The championship started off with the opening ceremony held at the Auditorium and was attended by the FASU executive committee, athletes and team officials. Mr. Boniface Salano gave the opening remarks and welcomed the athletes on behalf of the hosts.
FASU’s Immediate past president, Dr Michael Malumbete Ralethe also spoke at the event and thanked everyone for showing up and introduce the new FASU President, Ms. Nomsa Mahlangu. He commended FASU for being one of the few organizations with women in top positions, that is; President and Secretary General, Ms. Peninnah Aligawesa Kabenge.
Ms. Nomsa also thanked the participants for showing up and stressed the importance of keeping time in both this tournament and as a discipline in their day-to-day lives. She then wished them a nice tournament stressing the relevance of the Afro-Varsity 3x3 Basketball Championship as being a qualifier for the FISU 3X3 world University league.
The first game tipped off at 10:00 with Makerere University facing University of Johannesburg in the men’s category with the former emerging as victor in the heated tie with the final score 13-10.
Institut supérieur d'entrepreneurship et de gestion (ISEG), who won gold in the 9th FASU Games at Mekelle-Ethiopia opened their defense with a 17-4 victory over Makerere University in the women’s category ensuring that they had a strong start to their defense of the crown for Africa 3X3 inter-university competitions.
